Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers to common questions about gold prices, purity, market movements and the data you see on GoldRates.
Understanding gold prices
Why is gold priced differently in every country?
Gold trades in global markets, but its value is expressed in different currencies around the world. Currency movements therefore affect the local gold price. Retail prices can also vary because of taxes, dealer premiums, making charges and other local costs.
What does the spot price of gold mean?
The spot price is the current market reference price for gold for near-immediate settlement. International gold markets commonly quote spot gold per troy ounce, while GoldRates also presents prices per gram and by purity where appropriate.
Why does the gold price change during the day?
Gold prices move as global markets respond to interest rates, currencies, inflation expectations, economic data, geopolitical events, central-bank activity and changes in investor demand.
How often are GoldRates prices updated?
GoldRates refreshes its latest market prices throughout the day. Update frequency can vary by dataset, while historical information is stored separately for charts, comparisons and market analysis.
Why might the GoldRates price differ slightly from another website?
Gold market prices can change continuously, and different data providers may update at slightly different times or use different reference points. Small differences between reliable market sources are therefore normal.
Purity, jewellery and gold value
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?
Karat measures gold purity. 24K represents the highest commonly traded purity. 22K contains approximately 91.7% gold, while 18K contains 75% gold. Lower-karat gold contains a greater proportion of other metals.
Why is 22K gold worth less per gram than 24K gold?
A gram of 22K gold contains less pure gold than a gram of 24K gold. Its underlying gold value is therefore lower even though the total physical weight is the same.
Are GoldRates prices the same as jewellery shop prices?
Not necessarily. GoldRates provides market-based gold values. Jewellery retailers may add making charges, design costs, dealer margins, taxes and other premiums to the underlying value of the gold.
Does the weight of gemstones count toward the value of gold jewellery?
No. When estimating the underlying gold value of jewellery, the weight of stones, non-gold components and other materials should generally be excluded from the gold weight.
What is a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is the standard weight used internationally for precious metals. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams.
About our data and information
Where does GoldRates get its price data?
GoldRates uses trusted market-data sources and maintains its own stored historical records for selected calculations and comparisons. We focus on displaying supported currencies where we are comfortable with the quality of the underlying market data.
Which currencies does GoldRates currently support?
GoldRates currently focuses its primary global pricing coverage on USD, INR, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY and HKD. We prefer to support a smaller number of well-sourced currencies rather than display calculated prices that may give users a false impression of direct market data.
What is the Gold Market Read?
The Gold Market Read is a GoldRates research feature that brings together selected market factors to provide a structured view of current conditions affecting gold. It is designed as an informational market indicator rather than a prediction or trading recommendation.
Can historical gold prices change?
Historical records are intended to preserve past market observations. However, datasets may occasionally be corrected or improved when a source identifies an error or when GoldRates improves the way historical information is stored and presented.
Is GoldRates an investment-advice website?
No. GoldRates provides market information, historical data, news and educational resources. Nothing on the website should be considered personal financial or investment advice.
